JOHN HUDSON KEYS, Grazier, Bengalla Estate, was born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh , Ireland, where he received his education , and resided on the paternal estate of Killanoogan, on the shores of Lough Erne. At the age of twenty-five years he left Ireland for Australia and landed at Sydney upwards of fifty years ago. One of the pioneers of the Upper Hunter, he settled at St. Heliers, the property of the late Colonel Dumaresque, and filled the position of manager of this and other properties for the period of fourteen years. At the end of this time he purchased the estate of Bengalla, where he resided until the time of his death in 1887, being then in his seventy-sixth year. Mr. Keys possessed in an eminent degree that energy and force of character for which so many of the pioneers of the colony have been distinguished, and until enfeebled by age fulfilled the duties of a representative man of the district. He took a prominent part in all matters having at issue the benefit of the district and identified himself with every movement for the public weal. He played a great part in everything charitable, social, and political, and was a magistrate of the colony for thirty-eight years. Though repeatedly solicited to stand for parliamentary honours, he always declined, as he did when offered a seat in the Legislative Council He was for many years president of several of the principal institutions of the district, and took a special interest in the hospital, which he assisted by his counsel and his means. He it was who imported from Ireland and New Zealand the ova of trout and other rare fish, which were hatched under his supervision, and introduced into many streams throughout the district. Mr. Keys was instrumental in causing many families from his native district in Ireland to emigrate to this colony, some of whom are, at the present time, among the most thriving settlers on the Hunter. Mr. Keys married in early life one of the Hetherington s of Denbigh, Scotland, an old and respected family. The deceased gentleman is survived by his wife and a family consisting of two sons and two daughters
